Notarius Publicus

Notarius Publicus certifies signatures and confirms that documents are authentic. This is often the first step for using documents abroad.

What does Notarius Publicus do?

Notarius Publicus is a public official appointed by the County Administrative Board. Their task is to certify signatures, confirm that copies match originals, and perform other notarial acts.

When using private documents (such as powers of attorney, contracts, or certificates) abroad, many countries require that documents first be notarized by Notarius Publicus.

After notarization, the document can then be legalized by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and possibly the embassy of the country where it will be used.

Common notarizations:

  • Certification of signatures
  • Powers of attorney and contracts
  • Copies of passports and ID documents
  • Company documents and minutes
  • Marriage certificates and consents
  • Translations (certificate of correctness)
